I like to focus on the positive, but if you’ve ever made a mistake in your business in the last month, quarter or year, you know how hard it is to stay positive sometimes. Here’s a way that I have learned to think about mistakes in a manner that will affect your future so that you can learn from it.

In last week’s blog I said there was Learning or Winning Only!! If you’ve ever made a mistake though, think of it in terms of part of the “learning” process. Think of mistakes as the tuition that we pay as business owners. It’s the entrance fee or tuition we pay for learning.

We can learn how to win the next time we run across the same situation. If you look at mistakes as the tuition for your future greatness, it is an opportunity for you to continue to learn, win and grow.

There is a cycle that I like to call “Learning or Winning.” If you keep repeating this cycle, you will always come out ahead and succeed as a business owner or entrepreneur.

If you recognize that something hasn’t worked in a particular situation, then you are already in the learning phase. You begin to try something else to see if you will have better results next time. This is called the learning stage.

You are learning from the past and then move on to try and implement something new so that you get a better result and this leads to the winning stage.

As it happens, even when you get to the winning stage, you sometimes have setbacks and find yourself back to the learning stage again.

This is the learning or winning process.

But it has to start with every day in every situation asking:

  • What went wrong?
  • What can we learn from this?
  • How can we get better to win bigger next time?

And then making those changes as fast as you can — and then doing it again and again and again.

To quote Nelson Mandela: “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

If everybody in your company applied this mindset of asking these three questions, it would make your business more valuable, you would serve your customers better, and you’d be creating a better future for everyone you come into contact with.
